Introduction
The Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP+) assessments measure the academic performance of students in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. The assessments consist of two major components: the Basic Skills Assessment and the Applied Skills Assessment. There is a norm-referenced component (CTBS-5), designed to allow for comparisons of Indiana student achievement to that of students across the nation, and an academic abilities assessment (the Test of Cognitive Skills, Second Edition). The Basic and Applied Skills assessments (criterion-referenced) measure students' mastery of Indiana Academic Standards.
The demand is greater than ever for people who can read, write, and speak effectively; analyze problems and set priorities; learn new things quickly; take initiative; and work in teams. Technology has already transported us into a time where the next e-commerce opportunity is limited only by our imagination.
That is why Indiana has established new Academic Standards in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. These world-class standards outline what a student should know and be able to do in each subject at each grade level.
