St. Matthew Parish has been selected as one of five participants to take part in a 10-week Sustainability Pilot Program. As part of this program, we will
· Identify opportunities and priorities for improving sustainability practices, including an energy assessment to be performed through the Indianapolis Power and Light Small Business Direct Install program
· Learn best management practices for parish, school, and ministry operations
· Develop a 12-month Sustainability Action Plan that reflects our priorities for implementation after the 10-week program
The Archdiocese Creation Care Commission will provide technical and other resources to assess our current impacts as well as suggest opportunities for improvement through specific actions. Three college interns–one from the Indiana Sustainability Development Program and two provided by Mundell & Associates–will work with us and other participants throughout the summer. The Creation Care Commission will provide ongoing support during implementation of our action plan.
We thank the financial sponsors for their support of this pilot program–Mundell & Associates, Inc.; the Johnson Melloh Family of Companies; August Mack Environmental, Inc.; and the St. Thomas Aquinas Creation Care Team.
As Pope Francis admonishes in his encyclical letter: “Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat [global] warming,” and “The effects of the present imbalance can only be reduced by our decisive action, here and now.” Laudato Si´, Paragraphs 23 and 161. Let us pledge to answer Pope Francis’ call by enthusiastically embracing this opportunity.
